The value of German cars in 2019

What is the value of German cars in 2019? What is this value changing over a period of time? In this article, I’ll analyze 10 top-middle class German car models. If you have feedback regarding my article, or if you want a certain analysis please leave me your opinion in the comment section.

And now we begin. I’ve moved to Germany in January. Since then, I’ve started taking German classes, so that I could integrate myself better. After the first six months, things are starting to get along. As in the near future, I want to buy a car, lately, I’ve been doing some research in which regards the car market in Germany.

So in this post, I want to show you how the value of German cars in 2019 decreases over a period of 5 years. As a result, I’ve selected 10 cars models, from different top brands. That includes Mercedes Benz, Porche, and BMW. Then I studied their depreciation over time. For the scope of this article, I’ve selected 10 representative cars models sold on mobile.de.

Similarly, for the period between 2008 and until 2015, I’ve selected from the same website second-hand cars. Therefore, the cars have almost the same setup. Why I think that everybody, before buying a car, should take some time and make a little research, is because you must decide what works for you. For example, depending on your budget, if you are going to buy a new car or a second-hand car. If you think about getting a loan to buy a new car, you should know how much will that car worth in 5 or 10 years. Maybe you’ll end up to pay much more than you expect at first glance.

When you think about it, maybe it’s a better deal to buy a 2-year-old car and just change it after 3 years with another one. All the selected models have gas engines and some of them have an automatic gearbox. Ok so let’s begin.

1. Mercedes-Benz A 180

Above all, the Mercedes-Benz A180 is a small city car or a car for a young couple. It is focused on costumes that want flexibility, mobility, who usually live in the city or just want to commute. In addition, the analyzed model has a 1.6 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. It’s average consumption is 5.5 l / 100 km (combined), 7.5 l / 100 km (city) and 4.3 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 20 – 30 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 65 Euros for gas.

Is Mercedes-Benz A180 still worth it ?

The price for a new Mercedes-Benz A 180, bought from the internet is around 25.500 Euros. After 5 years this car will lose 44% of its value. Most of the value will be in the first and 4th year. As a result, this means that the best thing to do, is to buy a 1-year-old car. After just one year the car’s depreciation will decrease and so to say it is not too old.

2. BMW 120i

The new BMW 120i is basically the same car as The Mercedes-Benz A180. It serves the same purpose and audience. It is a small city car, with witch you can go to work, groceries and sometimes in small vacations. The analyzed model has a 2 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. For instance, its average consumption is 5.7 l / 100 km (combined), 7.5 l / 100 km (city) and 4.7 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 20 – 30 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 65 Euros for gas.

The difference between the Mercedes A180 is that although it consumes a little more gas, the engine develops more power, with translates actually in fuel save if you like to drive fast.

Is BMW 120 still worth it?

When it comes to depreciation, there is a difference in the case of the BMW 120. The car will lose more value after in the second year of usage. That means that it is better to buy a new one than a 1 year old one. In the 3rd and 4th year, the car loses about 6% which is less than an average of 9% in case of the Mercedes-Benz A180. So if you are on a budget, and you really want this care, it is better to buy a 2-year-old model.

3. Mercedes-Benz B200

Similarly to other models, the B Class from Mercedes is a versatile car. It is mostly used by young couples or families. The analyzed model has a 1.3 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 5.4 l / 100 km (combined), 6.8 l / 100 km (city) and 4.6 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 20 – 30 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 69 Euros for gas.

Is Mercedes-Benz B200 still worth it ?

In 5 years, a Mercedes-Benz B200 depreciates about with a little over 40%. The car will lose most of its value after in the first year of usage. Meaning the car will value less than 25% after just one year. That being said, according to the statistics, it is better to buy a car after just one year, if you only take into account the price. A car in Germany, after just one year, can have up to 20-30.000 km, which is still new. The major mechanical components should be serviced around 60.000 km.

4. Mercedes-Benz C200

Finally, I continue my presentation with the C Class from Mercedes. This car was specially built for couples and families. It’s more than a city car, it’s a car which you can basically drive in any situation. What differentiates this car, from the A-class or B class from Mercedes, it’s the style. The C200 is the best car you can drive from the start of the “classic line” or “business line”.

Similar to other similar car models, the analyzed model has a 1.3 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 6.6 l / 100 km (combined), 8.7 l / 100 km (city) and 5.3 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 35 – 40 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 80-90 Euros for gas.

Is Mercedes-Benz C200 still worth it ?

Similar to the other cars presented above, it’s value decreases by approximately 45% after 5 years. The car loses most of its value in the first year. In the next 2-3 years, the car will lose approximately 5% of its value each year, and then around 15% per year of exploitation. Our recommendation is to buy this car from the 3rd year. This way you will get almost all the new features but you’ll pay only around 35-40% the price of a new car. The car should have around 40-50.000 km, still 10.000 km until the major service from 60.000 km.

5. Mercedes-Benz E200

With this car, we are entering the big boys club. In other words, Mercedes-Benz E200, part of the E-Class models, is one of the most advanced cars you will ever find. Its main competitors are BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. However, this is not a car for everyone, this car is for the ones who have a style.

The analyzed model has a 2 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 7.2 l / 100 km (combined), 9.3 l / 100 km (city) and 5.9 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 40 – 50 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 90-100 Euros for gas.

Although this car has the technology to talk to other cars and to send feedback to the driver about events that he is not yet aware, when it comes to depreciation, things are similar. The car loses most of its value in the first year. In the next 2-3 years, the car will lose approximately 5-7% of its value each year, and then around 18% per year of exploitation. Our recommendation is to buy this car from the 2nd year.

6. BMW 218i

And now I present a competitor of the B-Class. The BMW 218i is a sporty and compact car. I can stay that this is a car specially made for the young generation. With a dynamic look, it can still accommodate 5 persons and lots of storage space. This is a car that you could drive to work every day for business meetings and enjoy its strength and dynamism during the weekend.

The analyzed model has a 1.5 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 5.8 l / 100 km (combined), 7.3 l / 100 km (city) and 4.9 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 30 – 35 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 70 – 75 Euros for gas.

Is BMW 218i still worth it ?

When it comes to depreciation, this car offers a new perspective. Its value decreases only 16% in the first year. The bad news is that in the 3rd year it will lose more than 20%. Still, in the 2nd and 4th year, it will lose around 5%.

As the graphs speak for themselves, I recommend buying this car as new. Yes, it is the first car in our list that is worth it to buy it brand new.

7. BMW 320i

Above all, the 3 Series from BMW was always a car which combines versatility with a confident appearance. It is a sporty car full of innovative technologies. This type of car is useful in everyday situations, vacations and business meetings. The 3rd Series it’s the best selling car for BMW accounting for around 30% of production and this model won many awards.

The analyzed model has a 1.5 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 6.2 l / 100 km (combined), 7.7 l / 100 km (city) and 5.3 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 35 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 80 Euros for gas.

Is BMW 320i still worth it ?

Another surprise for the Bavarian car manufacturer, the 3rd Series has an almost linear depreciation curve. Although, its final depreciation after 5 years is around 45% as most of our cars, presented in this article.

After the first year of usage, the car loses 25% of its values, continuing in the next 4 year to decrease in values with an average of 8%. Depending on your budget it a good deal to buy a 2, 3 or 4-year-old BMW 320i.

8. BMW 420

The 4th Series from BMW. Another big boys car. This car basically screams sport. A sports car with magnificent looks and aesthetics. Cutting edge technologies make this car a powerhouse that rides and drives excellent. Some say that this car is one of the most advanced car modes ever manufactured by BMW. It is a pleasant drive for everyday groceries or business meetings.

The analyzed model has a 2 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 6.5 l / 100 km (combined), 8.3 l / 100 km (city) and 5.5 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 37.35 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 82.5 Euros for gas.

Is BMW 420 still worth it ?

When it comes for the 4th Series of BMW we’ll have another surprise. The car value decreases with an average of 12% per year. The depreciation is constant with only 14% for the first year. After the first 5 years, the car will lose only 42% of its values, which is 3% less than for the other similar cars models.

In this particular case, I don’t have an exact recommendation, in which regards the perfect time to buy a car. Should you buy it new or second hand? I really don’t know. In fact, in this article, the value of German cars in 2019, this is one of the best models analyzed. I do think that whatever you choose to buy, it will be a fantastic decision.

9. Porsche 911

Is it a bird, is it a plane, no it’s the Porsche 911. Above all, Porsche 911 is an emblematic car a true icon for the car industry. The car manufacturer from Stuttgart has created one of the most beloved cars in the world. With only one look it can get under your skin. This is not a normal car, this is a powerhouse on steroids. The way it drives and looks can make you feel unreal.

The analyzed model has a 3 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 7.7 l / 100 km (combined), 10.1 l / 100 km (city) and 6.4 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 45.45 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 96 Euros for gas.

Is Porsche 911 still worth it ?

And it’s worth it. In contract to the other car models presented in this article, this car is the best deal in which regards the statistics. For instance, it will lose only 37% of its values, in the first 5 years. More of that, it will lose an average of 11% per year of usage. Analyzing this data, that conclusion is that the best time to buy a Porsche 911 is the second year of usage. I also think that it doesn’t matter how old is this car, if you can afford it, you should definitively buy it.

10. Porsche Cayenne

Stuttgart…a wonderful city when it comes to car manufacturers. Maybe one of the most iconic cities in the world for the auto industry. Porsche Cayenne, although it is not as expensive or notorious as Porsche 911, it is still a wonderful car to drive. It has style, it has power and from our point of view, it is a magnificent car for a wealthy family.

The analyzed model has a 3 liter Euro 6 petrol engine. Its average consumption is 9.2 l / 100 km (combined), 11.3 l / 100 km (city) and 8 l / 100 km (out of town). At the current prices of gas in Germany 2019, if you live inside the city you will probably pay around 50.85 Euros per month to get to work. If you plan a round-trip 1000 km away, during the vacation, for example, you should pay for gas around 120 Euros for gas.

Is Porsche Cayenne still worth it ?

Porsche Cayenne delivers another surprise when it comes to depreciation. It will lose only 2% of its values in the first year. Yes, you read correctly only 2% in the first year. It will catch up to an average of 11% per year in the next years. Morefore, it will lose 42% of its value after 5 years of usage. If you still need a recommendation, I think, you should buy a new car.

Final thoughts …

I find that before buying a German car, is important to know the value of German cars in 2019.

After I’ve written this article I’ve felt like I have left Audi aside. But don’t worry. I’m planning to have a special new article and it is all about Audi. As it can be seen or read in this article, the presented car ar all car from top manufacturers. I’m also thinking to prepare an article in which I do the same analysis for…let’s say…normal people car.
